Lower Depths Tap Room

~0.8 miles away (476 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215)

I go here whenever I’m near BU. Not a large bar, but great beer list. Laid back atmosphere, good prices (but cash only!).

Sunset Grill & Tap

~1.2 miles away. (130 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA 02134)

Long tap list! Comfortable, lots of space, decent pub food.

Bukowski Tavern

~1.4 miles away (50 Dalton Street, Boston, MA 02115)

Good vibe and one of the larger beer lists in the area.

Publick House

Green C Line, about 25 minutes (1648 Beacon St, Brookline, MA 02445)

Belgian beer specialty bar with great food. Great draft and bottle list. Little higher end / more restaurant-y than the tap rooms and taverns.

Cambridge Brewing Company (CBC)

47 bus and a 0.7 mile walk, about 25 min (1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA 02139)

These folks know what they’re doing! Great beer, good food (vegetarian chili nachos!), very laid back, and lots of room inside and out.

Lord Hobo

47 bus and a 0.7 mile walk, about 25 min (right around corner from CBC, 92 Hampshire St, Cambridge, MA 02139)

40 taps and one of the best rare bottle lists in the area, comparable to Publick House with a little less of a Belgian focus. A little higher end than the taverns / tap rooms.

Night Shift Brewing

Gotta Uber/Lyft/Fasten there, about 20 minutes (87 Santilli Highway, Everett, MA 02149)

Giant warehouse and the actual brewery is back 2/3 of it. They are great, love to experiment, and age lots of things in barrels. No food (although sometimes a food truck), just a bunch of tables in an open space next to a bar. Feel free to bring food or order food directly to the location.

Harpoon Brewery

Harpoon may be a pretty commercial location, but their tour is on point and they have the most experience of anyone around doing large groups. Also their canning machine looks amazing if you come across it while it is going at full speed, and in their taproom bar you can buy solid pretzels and flights of their experimental beer batches, many of which never get released commercially.

You should be aware of the

Trillium, Idle Hands, Aeronaut and Slum Brew, and the

macro breweries

Harpoon and Sam Adams (which both do brewery tours). Trappist beers from Spencer Abbey are also being found in an increasing number of beer stores.
